Setting Up Kid-Safe Internet: A Parent’s Quick-Start Guide

Router-level filtering, age-appropriate screen time limits, and a setup that doesn't get undone by the next software update. This is the exact checklist Larry runs through on every family setup visit.

Protecting children on the modern internet can feel like an impossible battle. With phones, school laptops, gaming consoles, and smart TVs in every room, trying to configure safety controls on each individual app is exhausting — and kids usually figure out how to bypass them within twenty minutes.

When I set up family internet protection during house calls in Montclair, Millburn, and Summit, we take a layered approach that actually works.

1. Protect at the Router Level First

The most effective place to establish basic guardrails is right where the internet enters your house: your WiFi router. By configuring family-safe DNS filters (such as Cloudflare Families or OpenDNS FamilyShield) directly on the router, adult content and known malicious websites are automatically blocked on every device that connects to your home WiFi — including friends’ phones when they visit.

2. Configure Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link

For personal devices like iPhones, iPads, and Android tablets, device-level operating system controls allow parents to:

  • Enforce bedtime downtime where communication apps sleep at 9 PM.
  • Require parental approval before downloading any new app.
  • Limit in-app purchases and prevent surprise credit card charges.

3. Separate Kids and Guest Devices on a Secondary Network

Most modern home routers support multiple WiFi networks (SSIDs). Placing kids’ gaming consoles and tablets on a dedicated network allows you to set customized bedtime internet shutoff schedules without interrupting your own evening streaming or work.
