A backup isn’t glamorous until the day it saves you. Then it’s the only thing that matters. I set up automatic, ongoing backups for photos, documents, and anything else you can’t afford to lose — so a broken laptop, a stolen phone, or a coffee spill is an inconvenience instead of a disaster.

Most people find out their backup wasn’t working the moment they need it. I check that yours actually is, not just that it’s scheduled to be.

Signs your backup situation needs attention

• You've never tested whether you could actually restore a file

2. Set up automatic cloud backup Files back up continuously in the background, without you having to remember to do it.
3. Add local backup where it makes sense For large photo or video libraries, a local backup drive alongside the cloud is often worth it.
4. Test a real restore I don't consider a backup done until I've proven a file can actually be recovered from it.

Once it's set up correctly, a backup should be something you never think about again — until the day you're extremely glad it's there.
