In-Home Computer Repair in White Plains: What a House Call Looks Like

Your computer has stopped cooperating. Maybe it’s frozen, painfully slow, or showing a message you don’t understand. Packing it up, driving it to a store and waiting days to get it back is the last thing you want.

That’s why most of my work in White Plains happens at the kitchen table, not behind a store counter. I’m Larry. I’ve been doing computer repair in White Plains, NY and across Westchester, New Jersey and New York City since 1999, and I still answer every call myself.

If you’ve never had a technician come to your home, you might wonder what actually happens. Here’s an honest look at a typical White Plains house call, from the first phone call to the moment I leave.

What a White Plains House Call Looks Like, Step by Step

1. You call, and a real person answers

There’s no phone menu and no call center. You tell me what’s going on in your own words. “It’s making a clicking noise” or “My email stopped working yesterday” is plenty. You don’t need technical vocabulary.

From that conversation I can usually tell whether the problem needs a visit or can be fixed remotely, and what to bring with me.

2. We pick a time that works for you

Same-day visits are available on most weekdays. If you call before noon, you have the best chance of getting one. Otherwise, we schedule the next available slot that fits your day.

3. I find the real cause first

When I arrive, I don’t start replacing parts or recommending a new computer. I look at the machine where you actually use it: your desk, your WiFi, your printer, your setup. Many problems that look like a “broken computer” are really a weak WiFi signal, a full hard drive, a failing cable or software running in the background.

Only once I know the actual cause do I recommend a fix. If something needs to be bought, I’ll tell you exactly what and why. I don’t sell computers, so I have nothing to gain from steering you toward one.

4. The fix, done right there

Most repairs are finished during the visit. That can mean cleaning out what’s slowing the computer down, removing a virus, replacing a failing drive, restoring email, or reconnecting a printer that went “offline.”

5. A plain-English explanation before I leave

You won’t be left with a working computer and no idea what happened. I explain what went wrong, what I did, and what you can do to prevent it next time. If you want, I’ll walk you through it on your own screen so you’re comfortable using it. That’s what setup and instruction is all about.

The Most Common Problems I Fix in White Plains Homes

White Plains has everything from downtown apartment buildings to older single-family homes in neighborhoods like Gedney Farms and Fisher Hill. The setups differ, but the calls tend to fall into the same groups.

  • “My computer is so slow.” This is the most common call by far, and it rarely means you need a new machine. Startup programs, a nearly full drive and outdated software are the usual culprits. More on that in Computer Too Slow?
  • The computer won’t turn on. A black screen or a frozen startup feels like an emergency. Often it’s something small: a power issue, a stuck update or a failing drive that can still be rescued. See Computer Not Working?
  • Viruses and scary pop-ups. A warning telling you to “call Microsoft now” is almost always a scam. I remove what got in and set up protection so it doesn’t happen again.
  • WiFi that doesn’t reach every room. Thick walls and older wiring create dead zones. A computer that “keeps disconnecting” is often a WiFi problem, not a computer problem.
  • Printers that say “offline.” Usually a network or driver issue, and usually fixed in one visit.
  • No backup of photos and files. If your only copy of 20 years of family photos is on one laptop, that’s a risk worth fixing before anything breaks. See Electronic Backups.
  • Home-office setups. Many White Plains clients work from home part of the week and need their computer, printer, email and video calls working reliably.

House Call, Repair Shop or Remote Help?

In-home house call: Best for hardware problems, WiFi, printers, new setups and anything “weird.” I check your whole setup, and you’re never without your computer.

Repair shop: Fine for simple part swaps, but you drop the computer off and often wait days. Nobody checks your WiFi or printer.

Remote support: Great for software, email and quick fixes. I connect to your screen online, with no visit needed.

Not sure which one fits your problem? Call and describe it. I’ll tell you honestly whether it needs a visit.
